Letter from the Chair

I hope you are all having a good autumn, both at work and at home. As your incoming chair, I am looking forward to another great year of MLA/NCC. This Fall, we can look forward to an informative chapter meeting, complete with a tour of UC Berkeley’s exciting new facility.

As the year goes on, I’m hoping that we may not only identify objectives to work toward, but that we can actually make progress toward them as well. If you have questions or concerns about the chapter and our work, please contact me or any other board member. I hope to see you all soon!

MLA/NCC FALL MEETING

You are cordially invited to the Fall Meeting of the Northern California Chapter of the Music Library Association held at the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library of the University of California, Berkeley on Friday, November 12, 2004. The gathering features a comprehensive tour of the recently opened facility, as well as a guided tour of the Bancroft Library with Bancroft Access Services Librarian Susan Snyder. An afternoon presentation is planned, but has not yet been confirmed.

Metered parking near the Uni-versity is limited and difficult to find after 9am. The Hargrove Library is located next to Morrison Hall, its former home, near the corner of College and Bancroft. NEW UCB MUSIC LIBRARY OPENS

The new Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library at the University of California, Berkeley opened its doors July 6, 2004 and celebrated with a formal opening ceremony September 26, 2004. More space, the latest technology, climate controls, heightened security, and room for growth are among significant improvements the nearly $14 million building offers.

The three-story structure, designed by the award-winning firm of Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Georgia, features green slate shingles covering the building's exterior, strategically placed amber-colored glass, and natural light pouring through a generous number of windows. A significant and unusual feature of the building is the rectangular, ground-floor layout that corresponds to the street grid of the city of Berkeley while the top two floors are rotated slightly, forming a parallelogram that aligns with the historic grid of the UC campus.

Dark cherry wood study tables, carrels, and chairs, custom designed by the Library Space Planning Office, were fashioned to meet patron needs with task lighting, electrical outlets, and wireless data access. A room on the first floor includes 46 computer stations, many linked to a digital music network, and provides facilities for listening, viewing, and research, as well as one electronic piano for reviewing keyboard music. A seminar room for graduate teaching is equipped with a piano, sound and video equipment, a projector and a screen. Music department graduate students also can take advantage of a special study room.

The new library is named for Jean Gray Hargrove of Berkeley, a UC Music Department graduate from the Class of 1935 and a Bay Area concert pianist whose $4 million donation made its construction possible. A portrait of Mrs.Hargrove, who visited on the library's opening day and called it "magnificent," hangs in the Reading Room.

This is your newsletter. It can be a token announcement of the forthcoming meeting, or it can be more. We are all busy with our activities, especially as musicians as well as librarians. If we all contribute to the newsletter, “many hands make light work.” I am asking for your contributions:

· Announcements of scheduled concerts on your site

· Information about promotions and other recognitions of chapter members

· Overview of your library’s special collections, special functions (digital pictures optional)

· Pertinent news releases about music librarianship

· Articles about music librarianship

· Jokes, anecdotes

It’s up to you: the newsletter editor is willing to compile a newsletter, but does not have time to go out and interview, take photos, etc. Your contributions literally “make” our newsletter a true means of communication for our chapter. There’s no rule that says this newsletter is only published twice a year: if enough information is received, we can publish more frequently.
